Without doubt one of the most enchanting scenes we see during the Christmas holiday season are the many Christmas light displays that line the streets and neighborhoods of the towns and cities all across America. For many people who participate in these events the planning for their festive Christmas lights display is a year long exercise. Many people go to the absolute extreme, often spending enormous amounts of money to build a Christmas lights display that features some unique aspects like a Santa Claus sleigh that appears to move through the night sky.
While there are many famous moments in television and movie history that highlights the use of Christmas lights, none are anywhere near as famous as Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation as he plans and builds his Christmas lights decorations in his front yard. The name “Griswold”, Chase’s character’s surname, is now a common slang term to use when you refer to someone that has gone to extraordinary lengths when building a Christmas lights display.
Planning Your Holiday Christmas Lights Display
For many the planning of Christmas lights is a very personal expression of the season. There are many people that cover every single space available on their lawns, rooftop and house. These days it is even possible to hire specialist companies to deliver and setup Christmas lights designed to make your house glow bright. In many suburbs around the Country, neighbors and strangers alike often visit these homes to marvel at the christmas lights show. Often people will visit particular homes every year just to see how their Christmas light displays have evolved and what is the new theme for that Christmas season.
For some people they use the Christmas lights as a way to brighten the season and to make their home cozy and welcoming to guests and strangers alike. Some enjoy the use of the popular icicle holiday lights, which give the impression of icicles hanging down from the gutters of the house. The soft gentle glow of these white lights is subtle and yet welcoming to passers-by.
A Small Town Christmas Light Display Becomes A Holiday Tradition
In a small town in Washington State, one man was famous for the Christmas light display that he would put on each year. People from surrounding cities and towns would drive to his neighborhood just to see his Christmas light display. One year a couple, who had grown up in the neighborhood, actually held a small private wedding ceremony in his driveway. After many years of popularity and fame, this man passed away a few months before the Christmas holiday, and that year his family placed a large angel in the front yard with a sign telling all the people who came to see his display that he had died and that his light display would no longer be seen during the festive seasons. For many, this was a significant loss in one of their much loved Christmas traditions.
